Succeeded his father on the old homestead. Educated at Cherry Valley Academy and served as a soldier in the Sacketts Harbor campaign of the 1812 war with the rank of lieutant. After the war he was captain in the 19th New York militia in training. During the Sacketts Harbor campaign, he and his company endured severe hardships in which they were exposed in winter. Lieutant Ehl and others suffered severely in after life from rheumatism that often incapaciated them for farm work.
On his return from the war, he took up farm work, with little success due to his health. In 1818 he married Elizabeth Dygert, her great grandparents were the pioneers Johan Pieter and Anna Elizabeth Fox Dygert.
