August Henry Elker was born on 22 May 1847[1] (or possibly 22 May 1849) in Germany.[2] The 1880 US Census says that August (and both parents) were born in Hannover.[3] He was a resident of Baden before he emigrated.[4] His parents are unknown.
August, a 22 year-old parson, left Baden and traveled to Bremen, Germany, where he boarded the ship "Deutschland" and steamed to America, arriving in New York, New York on 29 Mar 1869.[4][5]
In 1870, August Elker, along with 38 others, resided in a large boarding house in St. Louis (City), Missouri, and worked as a car driver[6] and later worked as a streetcar conductor.[7] On 19 Oct 1874, August Elker became a naturalized citizen of the United States.[8]
August married Bertha (Lipke) Higler on 28 Oct 1879[9] at St. Mary's Church in St. Louis County, Missouri.[10] August and Bertha had the following children:[11]

August and his family were enumerated in the following US Census records:
1880 United States Census, resided at 1826 Park Avenue, St. Louis (City), Missouri in the August Elker household: August 33, Bertha 29, Louis 8.[3]
1900 United States Census, resided at 1128 St Ange Ave., St Louis (City), Missouri in the household of August Elker: August H. 53, Bertha 49, Agnes H. 17, Clara E. 16, Lena 14, Henry A. 12, Rosa A. 10 and boarders: Charles Boehm 25 and Joseph Boehm 21.[12]
August died on 7 Feb 1906 and is buried at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery (Old), St. Louis City, Missouri.[1][2][11]
