Mary is the eldest child of Edward Ellery and Anne Haughton, and was born at Tywardreath, Cornwall, on 25th August 1840, where her father was a baker at Tywardreath Highway[1].
1841 Census
Mary, her parents, and brothers Richard and Thomas, emigrated to South Australia, departing Plymouth on 16th December 1848 aboard the SS Pakenham, and arrived at Port Adelaide on 21st March 1849[2].
At 16 years of age, Mary married James Bennetts. The marriage took place in her family home at Kooringa, on 15th September 1856[3].
