Biography

James was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1839,[1] the son of John and Mary Ann (Dugdale) Emmott, both natives of England. He grew up in Lowell, where his father worked as an engraver.[2] His father died in 1853, and at the time of the 1860 census, his mother was working as a housekeeper to support four children under 18. James worked as an engraver, and siblings Sarah, Mary and Thomas worked in the mills, as well.[3]

James was 23 years old and a resident of Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1862, when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He mustered in on September 19, 1862, as a private in Company B of the 5th Mass. Infantry. He served a 9 month term, and was discharged at Camp Lander in Wenham, Mass., on July 2, 1863.[4]

James was married for the first time just before he served in the military. He married Virginia White, daughter of Joshua and Harriet White, in Boston, in September of 1862.[5] They had at least two children, a son Albert and daughter Harriet. Harriet died in infancy. Virginia passed away in 1874, and he remarried two years later, to Lavinia Bartlett, of Goshen, Vermont.[6] They had one son, James, who died in infancy. Lavinia died in 1893, and James married for a third time when he was 61 years old, to Hannah Hunt, a housekeeper, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Warren) Hunt. It was her first marriage.[7]

He resided in Lowell for most of his life.[8] By 1920, he was a resident of the Soldiers' Home in Chelsea, Massachusetts.[9] He died there in 1921. He is buried at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts[10]
