Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1845. Birthdate is listed as Oct 27, 1845 [1], however tombstone shows as November 11, 1845. [2]

Immigrated to the United States aboard the Belgenland out of Antwerp, Belgium arriving at Philadelphia on September 21, 1891. The ships manifest indicates that the family's destination was Earling, Iowa. The family travelled with their six children, the oldest of which was about 15 and the youngest, Otto, was only seven months old. From Philadelphia, the family undoubtedly travelled by train to Earling. Within eleven months after their arrival at Philadelphia, her husband Frank, died leaving her as a widow in western Iowa with six small children. [3][4]

In 1891, St. Louis City Directory lists a "Greve, Elizabeth" as a widow living with "Francis H." at 3647 North Market, St. Louis. Which doesn't seem accurate as husband died in 1892.

In 1900 census, she is widowed farmer renting home with her 2 sons and 2 daughters. She was the mother of 11 children, 7 of them living. Census indicates she can read and write, but does not speak English.

Elizabeth Engle (also spelled Engel) died on December 1, 1907 and was buried at Saint Joseph Cemetery, Earling, Iowa. Her memorial has a photo on this page. [5]
