Biography

Anna is a mystery. She grew up in the family of David Smith and his wife Mary Tryon, but on Anna's marriage document she is shown as "Polly Enos alias Anna Smith". She was born about a year before David and Mary married, and family members have assumed she was fostered or adopted by David Smith and Mary Tryon Smith. Attempts to find an Enos (or Ens) family to which she may have belonged have so far been unsuccessful. There is no assumption that she may have been an illegitimate daughter of Mary's, though only some further documents and time will tell. Candidate Ens/Enos families in the area of Dutchess Co., NY and Litchfield Co., CT have so far not yielded anyone who could be her parent.

Two of Anna's daughters were married to David Smith's grandson Sardis Smith, and the Smith and Warner families remained in close contact for several generations.

After the death of Anna's first husband she married a second time, to Stephen Eldrige, but after Stephen's death she reverted to the name Warner and it is under that name that she is buried.
