Robert Etheridge is Notable.

Robert Bruce Etheridge was born on 31 July 1878 in Manteo, Dare, North Carolina, United States, son of Van Buren Etheridge (1840–1915) and Matilda Tillett (1839–1911).

Robert served as a State Senator for North Carolina, Banker, Superintendent of Dare County Schools, Clerk of Superior Court of Dare County, Post Master of Manteo, Dare, North Carolina, Representative in the General Assembly and many other Dare County involvements. He was once described as "never content to be involved in a single occupation." He was known in Dare County as "Uncle Bruce." Throughout the state of North Carolina he was known as "The Duke of Dare."

Robert went to school in Dare County, North Carolina. In those days education was limited in Dare County, so his parents encouraged him to go to Eliizabeth City, Pasquotank, North Carolina after exhausting his limited schooling in Dare County. To do this he had to travel by boat to Atlantic Collegiate Institute. It was here that he completed his high school education. In 1895 he enrolled in Trinity College at Durham, North Carolina. He graduated with a BA degree.

He was elected as Superintendent of Dare County, schools in 1899 - 1907. Then he became a cashier for the Bank of Manteo in Dare County, 1907-1933. He was also a partner with Theodore Meekins in an insurance and realty business in Manteo, Dare, North Carolina.

In 1903 he was elected to serve as the state house of representative for Dare County for the Democratic Party. He served as their representative for many years thereafter.

He was clerk of superior court for Dare County, North Carolina from 1906-1910. He was also Postmaster for Manteo, Dare, North Carolina from 1914 to 1922. In 1933 he was appointed by Governor J.C. Ehringhaus as director of the Department of Conservation and Development. A position that he held from 1933-1949.
