Biography

A miner in Waikaka - Barbary & Evans claim [3]

Inspection of Coal Mines Report 1898 appendix J.H.R.[1] 1893 report [2]
Edges Pit, Wendon/ G.H. Evans - This pit is worked opencast but from the nature and thickness of the ground to be stripped, I think underground mining would be better and more economical. The lignite appears about 16 ' thick. Mr. Evans keeps his pit in very creditable order.
Mr G. H. Evans, a very old and respected resident, passed away last week. Mr Evans came to the district when yet Waikaka was merely a collection of canvas shanties and the surrounding country an open sheep walk. He lived long enough to see the country all settled and a new era open out in the dredging industry. The late Mr. Evans was highly respected by a wide circle of friends.[3]
