Biography

It is doubtful that his middle name was Augustus. It is doubtful that his parents were Jonathan Evans and Elizabeth Smith of Cumberland County, North Carolina. CURRENTLY DNA and an assortment of records seem to discount that this William A. Evans is the William Augustus Evans from Cumberland Co NC.

If this WILLIAM A. EVANS is the man from Cumberland County, North Carolina according to currently accepted NSDAR member applications (which can be in error) he would have married an Anne Conger in Texas in 1862 (Texas Marriage Records date of 8 Nov 1862, Harris Co TX). The 1850 and 1860 census states that this Anne Conger was born 1843/1844 in Texas. They have a documented daughter Elizabeth "Lizzie" Evans who was born 26 Sep 1863 in Texas and died 27 Sep 1925 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co KY (Kentucky Death Record state father was a W. A. Evans from NC and mother was a Miss Conger from Texas. "Lizzie" is on the 1870 Census with her father William A. Evans (widower) and siblings Carnell P. and William C. Evans at Subdivision 35, Harris Co TX. In 1880 "Lizzie" is living as a "niece" in the home of Joe S. Massie, Houston, Harris Co TX. By 1900 "Lizzie" is living as the wife of a John F. Clardy in Herndon, Christian Co KY. Mr. Clardy died and this then in 1903 in Washington DC she married a Col. Jouett Henry.

Now that does not mean that this William A. Evans could not have left Cumberland Co NC after the probate of his father's LW&T. He IS on the 1850 Census in Cumberland Co NC listed as age 29 with his brother Erasmus Evans who later became the executor of the estate of Jonathan Evans, proposed father.

Keep in mind that the 1890 Veterans Schedule lists the William A. Evans who died before the 1890 Veterans Census in Hickman Co KY and whose wife Louisa collected veterans benefits, served as a Private in the 45th Kentucky Mounted Infantry Co. C, enlisting on 28 Sep 1863 and discharged on 24 Dec 1864. Other Civil War Records at Fold3.com states he enlisted at Paintsville, Johnson Co KY and was discharged at Catlettsburg, Boyd Co KY. Also the 1st two daughters of William A. Evans who in Hickman Co, Rebecca Ann Evans Scott and Sarah Jane Evans Byrd were born on 14 Jun 1861 and 07 Nov 1862 in Tennessee respectively. Their mother was Louisa Britt, not an Anne Conger. This alone puts into question as to this William A. Evans being the same person as William Augustus Evans of Cumberland Co NC.

Probate of discounted father Jonathan Evans (Sr) - wrote his Last Will and Testament dated 09 February 1857. This LW&T names wife and children: wife - ____ E Evans, children - Wm. A Evans, Jane Elliott, E H (Erasmus) Evans, Emily Robertson, Son-in-law James P. Robertson, John/Jonathan Evans Jr, James L. Evans. Jonathan Evans (Sr) also wrote a codicil to his LW&T on __ May 1858 giving to his son John/Jonathan Evans Jr who had recently married the land portion originally given to "Senior's" wife __ E. Evans.

"William was born about 1829 in North Carolina. He passed away before 1890 in Hickman Co KY. His 1880 census taken at Moscow, Hickman Co KY states his place of birth was North Carolina [1] although this conflicts with the death record of his daughter Rebecca Ann Evans Reilly (3rd marriage surname). [2] On her KY death certificate it is stated he was born in Tennessee. On the 1912 Missouri Death Certificate of his daughter, Sara Jane Evans Byrd it states (and concurs with the 1880 census) that William was born in North Carolina. [3]

  • William's exact death date is not known, but according to the 1890 Veterans Schedules, his wife Louisa (Britt) Evans is collecting benefits and the document states he died prior to June 1890. [4]
  • William and his wife Louisa also had 2 other children in addition to the daughters cited above. Those children were Mary Lee Evans born 14 Feb 1865 and Van T. Evans born circa 1871. These children are on the 1880 U. S. Fed Census previously cited at Moscow, Hickman Co KY. [5]
  • As stated previously, William's wife Louisa collected widow's benefits due to his service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. There were two men by the name of William Evans that served from Kentucky in the 45th Kentucky Infantry. There are documents that state the dates as reported on the 1890 Veterans Schedule - William's enlistment date of 28 Sep 1863 [6] at Paintsville, KY and his discharge date of 24 Dec 1865 [7] at Catlettsburg, Boyd Co KY.
