According to some, when Adolphus D Fann was born, his father, Edward Fann (ca. 1822-after Jun 1860), was 30 and his mother, Caroline Cooke (b. 1824 at Cooke's Mill Pond, Wake, North Carolina), was 26. Note, however,
that no evidence has been found that Edward Fann and Caroline Cook were his parents. That couple had a son Adolphus James Fann, and the history of subsequent known and proven generations of Adolphus do not fit with those of that James. Therefore, instead, the set of parents with proofs are used for this, though primarily those proofs are strongest for the present generation of this Adolphus, forward.
About his Mother
Moreover, the fact that his mother was Lucy Fann is supported by at least two records:
His death certificate shows only Lucy Fann as a parent, which is consistent with her partner, Haywood Porter, having married someone else; Adolphus may never have been told who his father was.[1]
By 1860, his (unmarried) mother, Lucy Fann, was living with her brothers (his uncles), Richard and John Fann along with Adolphus and his brother Olphas, or more precisely, Alpheus.[2]
Vital Date Support
His birth date conflicts with the birth date of a half-sibling, Celestial E (Porter) Butler, causing an error that is false. The half-sister had the same father, Haywood Porter, in common, but Lucy Fann was not the mother of Celestial - Margaret Jean (Butler) Porter was. The date recorded on his death certificate was reported by his son, and is therefore deemed reliable. It is noted that the date on the FindAGrave Memorial differs.
Lastly, it should be noted that the identification of the correct Adolphus is further reinforced by his burial in McMillans Chapel cemetery[3], concordant with him having predeceased his last wife, a McMillan.
Summary
When Adolphus D Fann was born 21 Nov 1856, in Sampson, North Carolina, his father, Haywood Porter, was about 20 and his mother, Lucy Fann, about 22. Adolphus D Fann and Harriett Spell married, and they had one daughter together. He then married Margaret Ann McMillan and they had five children together. He died on 16 Apr 1916, in Black River, North Carolina, at the age of 60, and was buried in Wade, North Carolina.[1][4]
Regarding his Paternity
From all appearance, Lucy Fann was an unmarried partner of Haywood Porter. In fact, no record emerges of her marriage to Haywood Bates (sic) (Porter), but she is reported as his husband in a record for the 1871 marriage of Adolphus.[5] Some researchers have read the entry of his name as Bates; whereas, the cursive appears to be subject to interpretation as either Bates or Porter. The Porter read is consistent with the below family of origin constellation discussion that is shown on his mother's profile.
First Marriage and Children
He had one confirmed daughter with his first wife Harriett Spell,[5] who is reported in the 1880 census.[6]
Ludelia Fann (1873-1898), m. 11 Sep 1887 George W Draughon[7]
He then married Margarett Ann McMillan circa 1882 in Cumberland, North Carolina and they had seven children together. Oddly, on the 1900 census, it indicates that she and Adolphus had been married 30 years[8], but that does not square away with the death date of his first wife, Harriet Spell, and her having delivered her apparent only child with Adolphus in 1873. Perhaps the 1900 census taker (roughly) used the age of the head of household and his (second) wife as a basis, not taking note that he had had a first wife who died in 1873?
John Garrison Fann (1885-1966[11]), m. 4 Mar 1905 Sallie Underwood[12]
Samuel Adolphus Fann (1888 - 1982[13]), m. Mattie J Bryant[14]
Mary Margaret (Fann) Autry[15] Daniel[16] (1890 - 1971[17])
James Fuller Fann (1894 - 1942[18]) 6 Jul 1913 m. Rhoda Brock[19]
Grandchildren with Harriett Spell
The identity of the following two are orphaned grandchildren (of Ludelia), though not specified as such in the 1910 household of Adolphus and Margret Farm (sic).[20]
George W Draughon (b. 1893-1968)
Alice Ethel Draughon (b. 1898-1980)
Apparently, they are a son and daughter of Ludelia Fann (1873-1898) and Georgia Washington Draughon, though listed with a surname of Fann in the census.

Paternal line Y-chromosome DNA test-takers:
To recap and amend: Nancy Johnson-Bain (1827-1904) was the mother of Martha Ann McMillan-Fagan (1854-1927) by Archibald McMillan (1825-1902); and the mother of Martha Ann McMillan-Fann (1849-1933) by Dougald Alexander McMillan. Records that I have seen do recognize the additional marriages, including Alexander's to Sophia E Larkin (1834-1902) with their 1st child Samuel Filmore McMillan (1856-1945), 2nd Nancy Larkin-Jones (1859-1932) and 3rd Sarah McMillan (1864-?), but the latter Sarah is shown with Sophia Larkin and differing birth dates (1830-1880).
Given the list of progeny for Nancy Johnson-Bain and Dougald Alexander McMillan, no clear-cut separation/divorce or widow status appears.
