Biography

William Fanshawe esq. was a son of John Fanshawe and Dorothea Kingsmill.[1]

William Fanshaw was baptised at Oakley in Hampshire on 15 Oct 1640 with his father named as John Fanshaw.[2] The baptism entry apparently states that his mother was Dorothea the eldest daughter of Sir Richard Kingsmill of Malshanger,[3] so William was probably born there.

William was the second husband of Mary (Walter) Sarsfield, daughter of Lucy Walter and, allegedly, the natural daughter of Charles II.[1] William Fanshaw married Mary Sarsfield on 09 Sep 1675 at St Mary Marylebone, Middlesex[4]. Mary died in 1693 and was buried at Barking, Essex.[1]

Children

Three children were noted in his will (see below):

  • Mary Elizabeth Fanshawe (married Nudigate)
  • Ann Dorothy Fanshawe (married Mathew)
  • Thomas Edward Fanshawe

William Fanshawe esq. was of St Martin's in the Fields, Westminster, and Great Singleton, Lancashire. He was appointed Master of the Requests on 12 Mar 1680/1681.[1]

He was buried at Barking, Essex, on 23 Jun 1708.[1]

Summary of the Will of William Fanshaw 1708

The Will of William Fanshaw of Saint Margaret, Westminster, Middlesex, was made on 26 Aug 1707 and proved on 13 Jul 1708.[5] His will was to be interred in the church of Barking, Essex, by the side of his wife Mary, sister to the late Duke of Monmouth.

He made bequests to his cousin Germain Mistress Dorothy Cooper, Cousin Mistress Susanna Fortescue, son Thomas Edward Fanshaw, eldest daughter Ann Dorothy Fanshaw, daughter Mary Anne Nudigate [later called Mary Elizabeth Nudigate].

The profits from his manor of Great Singleton, Lancashire, were to pass equally to his son and eldest daughter and subsequently to their heirs. If they were to die without issue then to his second daughter, and if she were to die without issue then to the heirs male of his half brother John Fanshaw deceased.

Lord Viscount Fanshaw was to be the guardian of his son.

The Executors were Jeffery Hornby Esqr, John Johnson and Mr James Landson.
