Biography

JONATHAN FARNUM,^[1] born at Andover, 27 Apr 1684 son of John Farnham and Rebekah Kent;^[2] Jonathan died at Andover, 24 May 1761;^[3] married 1st at Newbury, 16 Oct 1708,^[4] ELIZABETH BARKER, born at Andover, 11 Feb 1688/9;^[5] Elizabeth died at Andover, 18 Jun 1732.^[6] Jonathan married 2nd at Andover, 31 May 1733,^[7] MEHITABEL POOR, born at Andover, 10 Dec 1693 daughter of Daniel and Mehitable (Osgood) Poor;^[8] Mehitabel died at Andover, 19 Jan 1763.^[9]

Elizabeth Barker and Jonathan Barker resided in Andover where they kept a farm.

In his will written 20 May 1760 (probate 15 June 1761), Jonathan Farnum bequeathed all his estate to his four daughters Elizabeth, Rebekah, Hannah, and Anne to be equally divided. Son-in-law Benjamin Hall was named executor. Real estate was valued at £445.12.4. Widow Mehitable Farnum relinquished her right of dower in exchange for specified yearly maintenance to be provided by the heirs of the estate.^[10]

On 6 October 1761, heirs of Jonathan Farnum quitclaimed their interests in a portion of the estate to John Abbot 3rd and Hannah his wife of Andover for payment of £100. Those quitclaiming to their sister Hannah and her husband were James How of Methuen and Elizabeth his wife, Benjamin Hall of Methuen and Rebecka his wife, and Richard Barker of Pelham, New Hampshire and Anne his wife. The property included a 22-acre portion of the homestead of Jonathan Farnum and four acres of tillage land.^[11]
