James was born in 1868. He was the son of Thomas W. Featherston and Virginia C. Richmond.^[1][2][3]

James died at Washington D. C. on 12 May 1944.^[4] He was buried at Green Hill Cemetery, Danville, Virginia on 14 May 1944.^[5]
