Born as the son of Robert George Fergusson and the former Charlotte Lawrence, Robert Charles Lawrence Fergusson followed his father's footsteps in joining the U.S. Army. Although a non-graduating member of the Class of 1966 at the U.S. Military Academy, Fergusson attended Officer Candidate School and was made a second lieutenant of artillery. On November 8, 1967, one month after he earned the Distinguished Service Cross and almost four months into his tour, Robert Fergusson was killed in action.
Fergusson was admitted to the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati in 1966, representing Capt. Benjamin Biggs of the Virginia Continental Line. In 1988, the Robert Charles Lawrence Fergusson Collection was established in honor of his memory.[1]
