Biography

According to Thummel (1965), Sarah Finch was born 08 July 1762 in Stamford, Fairfield, Colonial Connecticut. A birth record in the Barbour Collection could not be found for Sarah. A Sarah FINCH whose father was James Finch was baptized on July 8, 1762 (source: CT Church Record Abstracts, 1630-1920) in New Canaan, Fairfield, Connecticut. Abigail (Seeley) Finch was the mother of James' other known children which were born in Stamford, Fairfield, CT and baptized in New Canaan. James Finch was listed as father on the baptism record for Sarah but like the other baptisms for James' and Abigail's children, the mother's name was not included. Some family trees suggest that Abigail Seeley died in 1861 before Sarah was born although no clear record of Abigail's death has been reported. Given there is uncertainty about Abigail's death date and unless a death record or additional sources can be found, the assumption is that Abigail is Sarah Finch's mother.

Her father James Finch moved to Crump Pond (Crumpond), Westchester, New York some time before 1863, taking his children (Thummel 1965). There is debate on whether his wife Abigail went with them, stayed behind, or had died (see James Finch's wikitree profile). If Abigail had died, James may have remarried. While records for his other five children show up in New York, no NY records have yet been reported for his daughter Sarah or for a 2nd wife. It seems that either Sarah stayed behind with relatives, perhaps even with her mother who may have still been alive, or she died as a child.

Records of marriage of a Sarah Finch to an Isaac Jones in Stamford on 5 Jul 1776 have been reported. Perhaps this is our Sarah, but given there are doubts about her whereabouts and survival after her baptism, her marriage to Isaac should be viewed as speculative until proof can be obtained.
