In 1850, Joseph and Rebecca Finegan and family were living in Jacksonville, Duval, Florida, United States. The household included three children from Rebecca's first marriage:

After the Civil War, Joseph Finegan was living in Savannah, Chatham, Georgia and resumed his role as a cotton merchant. [10] He met and married
Joseph died on 29 Oct 1885 in Rutledge, Alachua County, Florida aged 70.[11]Final resting place in Old Jacksonville City Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida.[12]

Joseph Finegan sometimes Finnegan, was an Irish-born American businessman and Brigadier General for the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. From 1862 to 1864 he commanded Confederate forces operating in Middle and East Florida, ultimately leading the Confederate victory at the Battle of Olustee. He subsequently led the Florida Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia until near the end of the war. After the war he returned to business and worked as a cotton broker.[13]
