Biography

He was named Robert Lynn Fitzgerald when he was born in 1925. He changed his name to Lynn Robert Fitzgerald as a young man and later adopted the spelling of his last name with a capital G. However, most people who knew him in his youth, including his wife always called him "Bob" or "Robert".

He served in WW II in North Africa and Italy as a radar operator, Technician Grade 5, which was equivalent to a corporal. While in Italy, he contracted Sand Fly Fever and Malaria and spent several weeks in the Army hospital in Naples.

Upon returning home, he married his high school sweetheart, Janice Walker in 1946. They moved to Southern California in the late 1940's. Lynn worked in the aerospace industry, including design work on the Apollo program. He was laid-off in 1970 in the downturn in the aerospace industry following completion of the Apollo space program. They moved to Pittsburgh, PA where he worked for Westinghouse and later to Illinois and eventually they ended up back in their home town of Kalamazoo, MI where he ended his career working for the Kellogg Company. They had four children. Janice died of cancer in Kalamazoo Michigan in 2004 at the age of 80. He later moved to the Grand Haven area and married Carol Fay, who also suffered from cancer and preceded him in death. He passed away in Grand Haven, MI in 2018 at the age of 93.
