My mother was a Flanagan. According to information I was given years ago your Edward's father James may be my Great-Great-Grandfather, by a previous marriage to a woman who died in 1874 after giving birth. According to information given to me James remarried, taking a son called Henry (my Great-Grandfather) into that second marriage.
Did your Edward have a sister called Mary Ellen? I have civil birth record for Mary Ellen, born to James Flanagan (a Scutcher) and Jane nee Calaghan, on 6 May 1878, recorded at Crieve, in the Parish/District of Brookeborough, Fermanagh. The informant was a Margaret (no surname) who was present at the birth. That Mary Ellen was half sister to my Henry and they both lived in Glasgow for a while, where Mary Ellen lived with a William Flanagan - a man I noted as her brother so Edward's brother, born c1876 in Fermanagh.
Does any of that sound possible/likely to you?
Cheers,
Bernard
