He grew up in Dry Fork, living with his parents and siblings. When his father passed away sometime before 1920, his mother moved in with her widowed father, bringing her 5 children. [2]
He continued to live with his mother through 1940, as can be seen by the 1930 and 1940 Census'. She appears to have owned the farm on which they lived and which he worked.[3][4]It's likely that he continued to live there with her until her death in 1954. He is buried next to her in the Flanagan Memorial Cemetery in Laneville, Tucker, West Virginia. [5]
Though there is no record of a marriage, and Sylvester was single through the 1940 Census, he appears to have married some time after that. He died in Paw Paw, Hampshire County, West Virginia on April 9, 1962. His marital status is listed as "married" and the informant of his death was Thelma Flanagan. [6][7]
