MacGregor offers William[1] as the father while Crauford maintains the father James.[2] Musham side-steps the issue by merely indicating that this William succeeded the elder William without saying whether he was a son or grandson.[3]
As his son Patrick was born before 29 Mar 1540, William's marriage was before 14 Jul 1539 and his birth before 14 Jul 1525. His succession was from James and and assuming that James was his brother, not father, means that it was William, who was father and who died at Flodden placing this WIlliam's birth no more than 42 weeks after that event or before 30 Jun 1514. To avoid a warning error, however, the date should be set to before 4 Jun 1514 or simply before Jun 1514.
