Biography

Hannah L Fling was born in 1860 in present-day Gilmer County, West Virginia to Hannah Bush Fling and George Fling.

She married Preston Preseley (P.P.) Gainer in 1884 at the home of her parents, the Flings. The original marriage certificate, filled out by hand and framed, gives a wedding date of April 21, 1884.^[1] The typed county record states a date of May 21.^[2]

Their children were Lyda Mae Bradshaw (1885 - 1943), Minnie Myda Gainer Wilson (1888 - 1970), Ananias Gainer (1890 - 1954), Homer A. Gainer (1892 - 1920), Silas Dinsel Gainer (1895 - 1918), Francis B. Gainer (1898 - 1898), and Vera Reta Gainer (1901 - 1902). Just three of her children outlived her.

P.P. and Lovie Gainer lived and farmed on Tanner Creek. Their residence was a log house that had been the home of Preston's parents, Mary E. Black and Francis F. Gainer.^[3][4][5][6]

Following the death of husband P.P. Gainer, Hannah Lovie married Francis C. Gainer. Francis C. (1848-1928), Preston's first cousin, was 70 years old. Lovie was 52.^[7] They had no children together. Francis died in 1928.

Hannah L. Fling Gainer passed away in 1931. Her marriage status was recorded as widowed, but daughter Lyda, the informant for the death record, gave the name of her own father, Lovie's first husband Preston, as spouse.^[8]

She is buried in the Tanner Baptist Church cemetery next to Preston. ^[9] All of her children are also buried in this cemetery except Lyda, who is buried in Fairmont, Marion County, WV.
