Biography

BIRTH: Margaret Elizabwth FLOOD was born on 1 October 1870 and her birth registered in Longford by Robert LEE. She was the daughter of Samuel Henry FLOOD, wheelwright, and his wife Betsy WILLIAMS.[1][2]

MARRIAGE: In Campbell Town, on 28 October 1896, by License, according to the rites of the Catholic Church by Martial MARY (Catholic Priest). GROOM: Michael MURPHY (age 32), a farmer, born at Cleveland, where he was usually resident, currently resident at Conara. His parents were Thomas MURPHY, farmer and Mary CHANEY [or CLANCY? difficult to read]. BRIDE: Margaret Elizabeth FLOOD (25), a resident of Cleveland, living with her parents, she was born at Longford, her parents being Samuel Henry FLOOD, carpenter, and Elizabeth WILLIAMS. WITNESSES: John MURPHY[? difficult signature to decipher] and Charles FLOOD.[3]

Newspaper announcement of marriage: MURPHY-FLOOD - On October 28, 1896, at St. Michael’s Church, Campbell Town, by the Rev. Father Mary, Michael Murphy to Lizzie Flood.[4]

1923 - At the Campbell Town Show, Margaret won second prize for her plate of “6 desert apples, largest”; and her daughter Jennie second prize for a bunch of asters in the flower competition.[6]

Margaret Elizabeth was widowed in 1926:
DEATH of HUSBAND: MURPHY.— On February 14, 1926, at the Campbell Town Hospital. Michael Patrick, beloved husband of Margaret Elizabeth Murphy, of Pituncarty, and second son of the late Thomas and Mary Murphy, of Forest Hall, aged 62 years.- Rest in peace.[7]

1928 - Marriage of daughter Elsie Ann to Edward Roy WICKHAM - …Elsie Ann, eldest daughter of the late Mr. Michael Murphy, of ”Pituncarty”, and Mrs. Murphy, of Epping. … The bride’s mother subsequently entertained about 50 relations and friends to a wedding-tea at Chapman’s Hotel, Campbell Town. … The bride’s mother wore black crepe de Chine, relieved with white; black hat…[8]

DEATH: MURPHY.-On September 29, 1941, at the Campbell Town Hospital, Margaret Elizabeth, beloved wife of the late Michael Patrick Murphy, and loving mother of Elsie (Mrs. E. R. Wickham), and Jennie, Epping, aged 71 years. R.I.P.

FUNERAL: MURPHY.-The funeral of the late Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Murphy will leave St. Michael’s Church, Campbell Town, TO-MORROW, Wednesday (October 1), at 3 p.m., for the Catholic Cemetery, Campbell Town. Friends invited to attend.-W. Lockett and Sons, Funeral Directors, phone 7.[9]

OBITUARY: Mrs. M. E. Murphy. The death occurred at the Campbell Town Hospital on Monday of Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Murphy. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Flood, and had resided in the Epping district the greater part of her life. She was widely known In the Midlands, and for a number of years conducted a business at Epping. Her husband. Mr. Michael Murphy, predeceased her about 15 years ago. Two daughters survive her, Mrs. Elsie Wickham and Miss Jennie Murphy, of Epping. The funeral will take place at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Campbell Town, today.[10]
