Joseph White Floyd was born in North Carolina in 1844 to John Floyd (1800-1867) and Nancy Lilly (1805-1876). When Joseph was 9 years old, in 1853, the family moved to Tishomingo County, Mississippi. When War broke out, he and his brothers enlisted in the Army. Joseph was injured in 1863. After the War, he was honorably discharged at Iuka, Mississippi. On the 3rd of January 1866, Joseph married Mary Anne Gatteys at Prentiss County, Mississippi. In 1890, he moved his family to Hunt County, Texas. In 1916, he applied for a military pension. In 1922, at the age of 78, Joseph passed away in Hunt County, Texas.

At the age of 18, Joseph enlisted on 29 April 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi into Company "F" 32nd Mississippi Infantry:
His brother, Edmund Deberry Floyd, was also badly injured in 1863 at Missionary Ridge. His brother, Robert Alexander Floyd, who was 31 years old, was killed by a Federal sharpshooter at Petersburg, Virginia.
