Biography

Harriett was born between April and June in 1843 in the Market Town of Mildenhall, on the River Lark, District of Mildenhall in Suffolk, England[1]. According to her Marriage Record, she was the natural daughter of Mary Ann (Ford), a single woman.

Marriage

Harriett (Ford) marries widower, Herbert William (Tytherleigh) on the 16 October 1886 at the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Abbey Street, in the Town of Crewkerne, Somerset, England[2][3].

Children

Herbert William (Tytherleigh) and Harriett (Ford) didn't have any children.

Residence

Harriett first appears in the 1851 Census living with her "brother" Robert (Rolfe); Robert's wife, Sarah; their children James, Ann and Frederick and Visitor, Harriet (Ford). Robert was a Farmer of 77 acres employing 4 men. They reside in the Village of Weston Ditch South, north west of the Town of Mildenhall, Mildenhall Parish, Suffolk, England[4]. However, by the Census of 1861, she is out earning her living as a Housemaid to Cornelius F. (Stovin), a M.D. Lic. Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon; his wife, Elizabeth (Stovin); Cornelius' father, Cornelius Senior; and Cook, Mary Ann (Coleman). They all live at Mill Street, Town of Mildenhall, on the River Lark, Mildenhall District, Suffolk, England[5].

She is still a Servant with the Stovin family in the 1871 Census. She resides with Cornelius F (Stovin); his wife, Elizabeth; their children Cornelius F. Junior and M. Mary Elizabeth and Cook, Jane (Knight). Their address is King and Queen Inn, Village of Wheatley, Wheatley Parish in Oxfordshire, about 5 miles (8 km) east of Oxford, Headington District, Oxfordshire, England[6]. However, with the Census of 1881, she has moved and is a Sewing Maid to Grace (Hicks) and her children Emily G. and Eda (Hicks). She resides at Wilbraham Temple, Village Great Wilbraham, seven miles (11 km) to the east of the City Cambridge, Chesterton District, Cambridgeshire, England. She resides there along with Housemaid, Louisa (Thumell); Cook, Elizabeth (Morgan); Laundrymaid, Jane (Bradley), Under Housemaid, Sophia (Langley); Kitchen Maid Annie (Cornwall); Footman, John (Wellman) and Groom, George (White)[7].

At the time of her marriage to Herbert William, her occupation was described as being a Matron at a Grammar School, in Abbey Street, in Crewkerne, Somerset, England. By 1891, she is living with her husband Herbert William (Tytherleigh) in East Street, Town of Crewkerne and Herbert's daughter, Ellen Elizabeth[8].
