Biography

Clara’s sister, Martha Francis Ford, did a hand written family tree from John Alden and Priscilla Mullens down to herself and her siblings.  She wrote this information at a request from her great-niece Faith Marie Berger for a college class at Phillips University - a class about genetics, thus the hair and eye colors are mentioned. “Your grandmother Phillips was born in Elmira N. York - they called my people “yankees”, but my father was of English stock.” “I can’t tell you any more about the Aldens than what History gives. John Alden and Priscilla Mullens came over in the Mayflower - My aunt Martha Ford Sears has, or had the family tree, she is dead now and I have a very slim chance of getting any news of the family tree - I am so glad to have what I do possess, and have never tried to find who has the tree now. She said it got so bulky, she gave it up toward the last any way. The Bretts also I know nothing more about -  I don’t know the years your uncles were born as I was only about five years old when my sister Clara was married. She was married at the age of seventeen, against her parents will, wouldn’t be eighteen until July 19th and was married March 2nd. Just sixty three years ago, today, George Phillips, her oldest child had light hair and blue eyes, died at the age of two years, I believe. Bert had light hair and blue eyes. Al had the same. Your aunt Callie’s name was Clara, but her mother’s name was Clara, so they called her Callie, black hair and black eyes. The rest of the family you know. My sister Clara lost a little girl named after me, Martha, but I never saw her, so can’t say what color hair or eyes she had. Write to uncle Bert, he perhaps could tell you something about it. Ask your mother if your uncle Al had blue or hazel eyes - I am not real sure and I am not at all well, but hope to be better as soon as warm wether comes. My stomach is giving me much trouble. Received a letter from your mother Fri. Was glad to hear from her. Marie, I never saw any of my grandparents so can not tell you more about them.  Lots of love, Aunt Martha"
