Biography

John Wesley Fortenberry was born about 1869 in Mississippi to James R. and Cynthia Fortenbery. James R. Fortenbery’s birthplace is listed in the 1870 record as Tennessee and the 1880 census as Alabama.

In the 1870 census the family was living in Mississippi and children in the household were: Louiza, Margaret and John W.

By the 1880 census Cynthia is listed as the head of household and Maggie and John are living with her at 15 and 11 years old respectively. John’s occupation was listed as Farm Laborer in this record.

John Wesley Fortenberry married Margaret Lena Whittington on February 1, 1894 in Rankin County, Mississippi.

In the 1920 census John Fontenberry is the head of his household living in Redack, Rankin County, Mississippi. With him is his wife Lena, their daughter Pearl and her husband Anse Green King and their grandson Ruffus King.

John and Lena’s daughter Pearl died in 1941.

John followed her in death in the year 1945. His grave marker is in Holly Bush Cemetery in Rankin County, Mississippi.
