Biography
Matthew was born in 1754. He was the son of Matthew Fortescue and Anne Campbell.
He was a Royal Navy officer, gaining the rank of Captain.
He married (1) Henrietta Archer, daughter of one Colonel Archer, on 1 November 1778. They had children including:
- Matthew Fortescue 1786-1852
- Reverend William Fortescue 1788-1856
On 6 June 1795 he married (2) Henrietta Anne Hoare, widow of Thomas Dyke Acland 9th Bt, and daughter of Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt. and Frances Anne Acland. They had a child:
- Commander Henry Fortescue 1796-1875
He died on 19 November 1842 at age 88. He was buried at Barnes, Surrey, England.
