Military

John enrolled on the 1st day of February 1862 in Company D of the 15th regiment of Iowa Infantry and was honorably discharged at Memphis, Tennessee, on the 17th day of January 1863 for a medical disability. He was described as being five feet seven inches tall with a sandy complexion, grey hair, and hazel eyes. ^[7]
