Biography

Luc Fougère was born on 18 September, 1879, at Havre Boucher, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where he was baptised at the Church of St. Paul the same day, to Maurice and Sophie Fougère[1].

The 1881 Census recorded Luke Fougere, 1, living with his parents, Maurice, 54, Labourer, and Sophia, 35, and siblings Martell, 15, Labourer, Frank Edmund, 10, Annie Lealmere?, 8, Margaret Louisa, 4, Raphial, 3, and Mary Ellen, 0, at Harbour Boucher, Antigonish, Nova Scotia[2].

The 1891 Census recorded Luke Fougere, 11, living at Lenwood, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, with his parents, Maurice, 65, Farmer, and Sophia, 45, and siblings Martell, 25, and Frank, 21, both Farm Labourers, Almire, 18, Margaret 15, Raphael, 14, Mary E., 9, and Elinor, 6[3].

The 1901 Census recorded Luke Fougere, 23, born 9 December, 1878, Farmer's son, his parents, Maurice, 76, born 26 July, 1824, and Sopha, 56, birthdate blank, and sister Eliza, 17, born 5 May, 1883, living at Linwood, Antigonish, Nova Scotia[4].

Luke Fougère, son of Maurice and Sophia Fougère, married Malvina Levandier, daughter of Maurice Lavandier and Celeste Cost, on 19 January, 1904, at St. Paul, Havre Boucher, Antigonish, Nova Scotia[5].

After their wedding, Luke and Malvina Fougere moved to Braintree, Massachusetts, where Luke was working as a Ship Builder at the time of birth of daughter Helen Cecilia in December, 1904, and began using Frazier as their surname.

Luke and Malvina Frazier had 11 children:

  • Helen Cecilia (Frazier-7165), born 6 December, 1904;
  • Sarah Sophia (Frazier-7166), born 22 March, 1906;
  • Mary (Frazier-7167), born 1907;
  • Margaret (Frazier-7172), born 23 September, 1909;
  • Joseph (Frazier-7173), born 1911;
  • Stephen Morris (Frazier-7168), born 4 February, 1912;
  • Doris Elizabeth (Frazier-7171), born 13 March, 1913;
  • Walter Francis (Frazier-7174), born 27 May, 1915;
  • James Edward (Frazier-7175), born 8 June, 1916;
  • Albert William (Frazier-7176), born 31 December, 1917; and
  • Mabel Agnes (Frazier-7177), born 15 September, 1922.

The 1920 U.S. Census recorded Malvina, 35, and Luke Frazier, 40, Shipper, Paint Factory, who had been living in the country since 1905, living in the Town of Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, U.S.A., with their children Helen, 15, Sadie, 13, Margaret, 10, Joseph, 9, Steven, 7, Doris, 6, Walter 4 7/12, James 3 6/12, and Albert, 2[6].

In 1922, Luke Frazier became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America[7].

The 1930 U.S. Federal Census recorded Luke, 50, and Lucy?, 45, and children Margaret, 20, Joseph, 19, Stephen, 18, Doris, 17, Walter, 14, Albert, 12, Mabel 7 2/12, and Luke's widowed mother Sophie, 84, living at ED4, Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts[8].

The 1940 U.S. Federal Census recorded Luke, 60, Labourer, Town, and Melvina Frazier, 55, and their children Mabel A., 17, Albert N., 22, new worker, James E., 23, Machinist Operator, Furniture Factory, and Stephen M., 20, Labourer, ? Mnfct., living on Cleveland Avenue, Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts[9].

The 1950 U.S. Federal Census, conducted 13 April, 1950, recorded Luke, 72, Labourer, Town Lightwardept, and Melvina Frazier, 65, and son James, 33, Machine Operator, Leather Mfg. Company, still living at Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts. Also in the household was lodger Sam Rook, 69, Widowed, Labourer, Town Highway Department, and living next door were son Stephen and his family[[3]].
