Biography

Emma was born in 1820. She passed away in 1891. [1]

Emma Fowler was a single woman with a daughter born to a fellow convict named Thomas Fry. Her daughter, Emily Fowler was placed in to state care whilst her mother served her sentence.

Emma was born in Bedminster, Bristol, England and her records show that she was a house servant and laundress. Emma is described as being 5ft in height, complexion brown, head small, hair brown, visage small, forehead high, eyebrows light brown, eyes hazel, nose pointed mouth wide, chin round, Protestant, and with E.J.F.H tattooed on her right arm, and J.D on the left.

Emma was tried at the Somerset/Wells Quarter Sessions on 25th March 1844 and transported for 10 years. Her crimes included receiving stolen goods, first conviction. Single stated this offence receiving stolen Work Boxes; receiving stolen goods of firewood, one month; stealing 11 shillings and 2 pence from a person at Manchester; stealing 20 pounds and 10 shillings from a person -4 months; stealing a sovereign -1 hour and for speaking to a Gentleman - 14 days.

Emma sailed on the maiden voyage of the ‘Tasmania’ which left London on Sept 8th 1844 with female convicts on board. The ship arrived in Hobart on 20th Dec 1844 and landed 189 convicts.

Emma married a fellow convict named John Pulford (‘Henry Porcher’1836) on 11 Jan 1847 at the Parish Church of Bothwell, Tasmania.

She was born in 1820 and died 12 Nov 1891 in Hamilton, Tasmania at the age of 71 years due to Senile Debility. [2]

Emma and John had 7 children together; John Roderick born 16 Feb 1747 Bothwell, Tasmania; William born 3 March 1848 Bothwell and died 29 July 1917 at Ross, Tasmania; Thomas born 2 Aug 1849 at Bothwell and died 29 July 1917 in Tasmania; Samuel born 29 Aug 1850 Bothwell and died 19 Oct 1925 at Yea, Victoria; Eliza born 19 Jan 1854 in Bothwell and died Jan 1902; Torra (twin) born 16 Feb 1856 Bothwell; and Charles born 17 Jan 1856 (twin) and died 1905 in Hobart Tasmania.
