In 1863 either by poaching or by accident Nat shot and killed a royal deer. To avoid trouble his mother gave him £2000, a bible and sent him off to New Zealand to his siblings William, Edward and Ellen. Nat left Gravesend on 14 July 1863 travelling third class on the Helvellyn arriving in Auckland on 16 November 1863.
Nat Fowler migrated from England to New Zealand.
From there he sailed on the steamer Phoebe arriving in Nelson to meet up with family on 27 November 1863.
