Biography

He was the 7th of 10 children of Abraham and Elizabeth Fox of Virginia. Often, his name is found as F. Anderson Fox, but what the F. stands for is unknown. Abraham Fox, 55 years old at the time, and James Wilson, 35, are shown as neighbors on the 1830 Monroe County, TN Census. They know and helped each other. James later helped Anderson Fox, who was 20 years his junior. Take notice of their childrens' names; James and Margaret Wilson had; Francis Marion, James Calvin, William B., John Newton, Margaret A., Selina and Benjamin. Anderson and nancy Fox had James Allen, Martin Emory, Margaret Jane, Nancy A., Albert Newton, Caroline, Bartley, Mary Josephine, Casbin, Francis Marion, and Henry H. Incidentally, one of the running gags in the later generation was when Albert Newton Fox married Margaret Wilson, and John Newton Wilson married Margaret Jane Fox. Newton and Margaret were often spoken of, and no one else was sure which pair was being referred to. Andersoon's first wife, Nancy, died in the 1860's, and his second wife was young Selina Wilson, whom he married about 1868 or '69, and is reflected as keeping house for Anderson on the 1870 census. Selina died, likely of disease or in childbirth in late 1870 or early 1871, as Anderson married again to Caroline Clark White on 14 Jul 1871. Caroline, who survived Anderson, is the only wife reflected on their gravestone. Nancy and Selina are among the unmarked graves in the Fox Cemetery when it was moved to Vaughn Cemetery in 1967 to make way for Stockton Lake. One other note; I set Anderson's likely birth year at 1815, because his age wildly fluctuated with census records. Thus 1850, age 35, 1860, age 48, 1870, age 50, 1880, age 67, and on his gravestone, he died in 1882, shows a birth year of 1797. I reason that the younger a person is, the more accurate he should be with his age, thus I estimated his birth year at 1815.
