Biography

My Great Grandfather Howard Ray Fox was born 24 Jun 1884 in Alton, Waseca, Minnesota to Issac D. Fox and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Adeline Weston. It shows he was Christened in Waseca, Minnesota no date shown for the Christening.

1895 Minnesota, Territorial and State Censuses finds the family living in Stowe Prairie, Todd County, Minnesota. It lists Howard Ray Fox as a white male aged 11 born in Minnesota. His father ID as a white male age 37, born in Wisconsin, his mother Lizzie A. as a white female age 31, born in Minnesota and his younger sister by 2 years Aletha C. as a white female aged 9, born in Minnesota. It states ID is a farmer who has lived in the state of Minnesota for 16 years and in the district for 7 years, 11 months.

1900 United States Census finds the family living in Stowe Prairie Township, Todd County, Minnesota, United States. It states his parents Isaac DeWitt and Lizzie A. Fox have been married 18 years. Isaac is listed as a Farmer who owns his own farm though it is mortgaged. The children listed are Howard R. age 15, Aletha C. age14, Kittie B. age 8, Jennie J. age 5, and Mark ID age 2. Howard is listed as a farm labor. Both he and Aletha are listed as out of work for 8 months. It shows Isaac, Lizzie, Howard and Aletha can all read and write. All children where born in Minnesota. The interesting thing to me is Isaac D was the census taker who filled this out. He had beautiful handwriting almost like Calligraphy. Though the census was taken on 27 June 1900 and Howard had turned 16 three days prior he is listed as 15. Most likely due to wording on census sheet "each person whose place of abode on June 1, 1900 was with this family" so his father was going by the age on June 1 instead of his age on last birthday.

September 12, 1918 Howard filled out a US, World War I draft registration card. It shows he is tall with a medium build, light brown hair and blue eyes. It states he lives in Butte Falls, Jackson County, Oregon and works as a hook tender in a logging camp for Big Pines Lumber Co. of Butte Falls, Jackson, Oregon. Elsie May Fox of Butte Falls, Oregon is listed as his nearest relative. Like his father he has beautiful handwriting. Why didn't I inherit the Fox handwriting?

He died in Multnomah County, Oregon in November of 1962. Though I knew him I don't remember him as I was only 11 months old when he passed. The Oregon Death Index lists his spouse as Clariss Fox.
