Biography

Elizabeth was contracted to marry William Montgomerie of Grenefield, second son of Hugh Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Eglinton, in an indenture executed by Robert Francis of Stane, her father, on 20 Jan 1507/08. In the contract, a provision was made that the Earl's younger son, William's brother, Hew to take William's place should William fail to do so^[1]. As it transpired William married Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was given the lands of Stane by charter 22 Jan 1508/09 by her father, Robert Francis of Stane. ^[2]

She was still alive 21 Mar 1554/55 according to a writ by her son, Hugh Montgomerie of Auchinhude in which he refers to her as "Elizabeth Francis, Lady of Stane".^[2]
