Biography

John Sedwick Freeland was born August 7, 1826 in Spencer, Owens County, Indiana – the son of Thomas Freeland and Rebecca Priscilla Sedwick. He moved to Illinois in the Spring of 1946.then moved to Monmouth, Shawnee County, Kansas in 1854. He built a home on his homestead that same year and by 1883 he had 160 acres of timber, pasture land for his cattle and pigs and land where he raised oats. John served on the local school board many of the years that he lived there. February 12 1857, he married Mary Jane Lindsey in Paris, Edgar County, Illinois. John and Mary had 10 children with 9 of them living to adulthood. Twins Heston Henry and Harriet A were born in 1857, Martin Luther in 1860, Lyra Rebecca in 1861, Mary Roxanna in 1863, Lydia Lindsey in 1865, Benjamin Franklin in 1867, John Sedwick Jr in 1869, May Elizabeth in 1871 and Julia Rowena in 1874. Sometime between 1900 and 1910 John and Mary followed the families of their daughters Lydia and May to Kingfisher, Oklahoma where the resided until they passed away. John Sedwick Freeland passed away at the age of 96 on October 16, 1922 and Mary Jane Lindsey Freeland passed away at the age of 91 on February 10 1924. They are both buried at Kingfisher Cemetery in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. John Sedwick Freeland joined the 2nd Kansas Militia in October 1864 to aid in defending Kansas from the the Confederate Army. He was captured by the Confederate Army at Locust Grove, but during the confusion he was mistaken for a Confederate soldier and was able to escape.
