James Strange French was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia on June 12, 1807 (or, according to his headstone, in 1808). He was the son of William French and Maria Brooke Duval.

James married Laura J. George in 1850.

James died in 1886, and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Gordonsville, Virginia^[1].
