Biography

James was the son of James and Elizabeth (Ruble) French of Estill County, Kentucky, and the brother of Hugh, George, Sophia, Angeline, Preston, Sarrilda, Curtis, and Cashus (twins). He was born in Estill County in 1856. His father died when James was about 3 years old. He had been a farmer in Estill County, and young James followed in his father's footsteps.

James married Delina "Lina" Johnson in Irvine, Kentucky, in February of 1875. Their children were James J., Eva, Alice, Hays, William, Curtis, Hallie, Sherman, and Bradley. James lived his whole life in Estill County. He died in 1934 and is buried in Kindred Cemetery in Estill County.
