Benno Gerry was born in March 1925 in Jansen, Sakatchewan, Canada. He was the son of Arnold Fricke and Anna Pfiefer. His father was a Lutheran pastor. At age 5, the family moved to Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan. He took his high school in Kipling before attending Luther College and Moose Jaw Normal School. He taught at East End before joining the Navy on the hospital ship, HMCS Avalon.
From Halifax, Nova Scotia he was transfered to St. John's, Newfoundland where he worked as a sick bay attendant. Later he did laboratory work.
In August 1948, he married Norma Weatherald and moved to Edmonton. He earned his Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education. They had four children: Gregory, Lisa, Jeffry and Roger. They moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and he earned his PH. D. in 1954. They moved to Ann Harbour, Michigan where Benno was Director of Evaluations and Examinations until his retirement in 1984.
Benno wrote in Educational journals regarding the standards and testing of students for university programs. He devised and published his own tests and measurements which were used at the University of Michigan and other American universities. They retired in San Diego, California in 1984. Benno passed away in April 1993 in San Diego.
