Biography

Elizabeth "Betty" Frith was born in about 1805, probably in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, England.

  • According to the 1841 census she was born in Staffordshire, and the 1851 & 1861 censuses have her birthplace as Newcastle under Lyme. The 1871 census has her birthplace as Wales, but this may just be an error.

Betty Frith married Henry Eaton on 19 Aug 1832 in Manchester, Lancashire.[1][2]

Betty and Henry had nine children:

  1. Ann (Eaton) Dodd (1833-1936)
  2. John Eaton (1835-1909)
  3. Edward Eaton (1837-)
  4. Sarah Eaton (1839-1839)
  5. Thomas Eaton (1839-1839)
  6. Henry Eaton (1841-)
  7. William Eaton (1844-1845)
  8. Charles Eaton (1846-)
  9. Martha Eaton (1851-1851)

In 1841 Betsey Eaton (age 30-34) lived at Ireland in Newcastle under Lyme with her husband Henry (30-34) and three sons: John (5), Edward (3), and Henry (0), as well as Emma Wade (10).[3]

In 1851 Bettey Eaton (age 46) lived at Ireland in Newcastle under Lyme with her husband Henry (45, Journeyman Hatter) and three sons: Edward (14, At Home), Henry (11, Scholar), and Charles (5, Scholar), as well as lodger Philip Pye (26, Journeyman Shoemaker).[4]

In 1861 Elizabeth Eaton (age 55, Keeper of Eating House) lived at Bridge Street in Newcastle under Lyme with her husband Henry (54, Gardener & Seedsman), two sons: Henry (19, Gardener) and Charles (14, Brickmakers Labourer), servant Mary A Gibson (14, House Servant), and two lodgers: George Henshall (55, Butcher) and Thomas Henshall (22, Butcher).[5]

In 1871 Betty Eaton (age 67, Annuitant) lived in Monks Coppenhall, Cheshire with her son Edward (33, Greengrocer), daughter-in-law Elizabeth (27, Greengrocer), five grandchildren: Elizabeth Ann (8, Scholar), Betty (7, Scholar), Edward (5, Scholar), Phoebe (2, Scholar), and Henry (0), servant John Moulton (13, Errand Boy), and boarder Catherine Morriss (51, Washerwoman).[6] Betty's marital status is married, but her husband has not been located on this census.

She is probably the Betty Eaton, aged 67 years, whose death was registered in Nantwich, Cheshire [the registration district for Monks Coppenhall] in the third quarter of 1872.[7]
