Biography

Charles Julius Fulda, son of Louis Philipp Fulda and Wilhelmina Catherine Steidtmann, was born on 29 September 1869 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, United States.[1] He was enumerated as an infant during the 1870 census, living with his parents in the New Orleans household of his maternal grandfather, Charles Steidtmann.[2] His parents had their own household by 1880, living at 1595 Tchoupitoulas Street.[3]

Charles was listed in New Orleans city directories in 1891 and 1892, working as a clerk for C. B. Buddecke & Company, a supplier of products such as bran, oats, flour, and fodder. After his parents left New Orleans around 1893, he moved into his own place at 351 North Robertson Street, and was working as a clerk in the auditing department of the Southern Pacific Railroad.[4] After 1894, he left New Orleans, joining his parents in the more rural Tangipahoa Parish, where they were living in a house on First Street in Hammond.[5]

Charles married Aurelia Ballard about 1906.[6][7] They had three known children:

  1. Charles Julius Fulda Jr (1907 - 1971)
  2. Louis John Fulda (1909 - 1926)
  3. Gaston Alvin Fulda (1918 - 1979)

Charles and Aurelia were enumerated with their children in a rented home in the Seventh Ward (Hammond-Ponchatoula area) of Tangipahoa Parish during the 1910 census. Charles owned a sawmill, and he could read and write.[6] In 1920 and 1930 they were living in Amite.[8][9] By 1940, they were living in the Sixth Ward (Tickfaw-Hammond area).[10]

Charles died at age 73 on 1 March 1943, in East Tickfaw, Tangipahoa Parish.[7] He was buried at Amite Cemetery.[11]
