PORTLAND DEATH
LATE MRS. MARY BROWN
VICTORIAN PIONEERING DAYS RECALLED
The death took place at the resi dence of her daughter, Railway-avenue, Portland, on Sunday night of a well-known and respected pioneer of Victoria in the person of Mrs. Mary Brown at the age of 83. Mrs Brown had been blind for the past eight years, but she bore her affliction with fortitude and cheerful-ness. Her general health was excellent until a week ago. She had lived in N.S. Wales for only six years, two of which were spent in Rylstone and the remainder in Portland. A native of Brighton (Vic.), she enjoyed relating the early, history of the State, with which she was exceedingly well conversant. Mrs. Brown's parents came to Australia 91 years ago and her father, William Fullerton, had a butcher's shop in Collins-street, Melbourne, which was then a very small town. The out-skirts were known as Black Forest, from the fact that they were inhabited by blacks who were at times treacherous. The old lady remembered the despatch of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition, of which her brother, the late Peter Fullerton, was to have been a member; but fortunately he was left behind. After disposing of his interests, Mr. Fullerton, senr., left Melbourne and settled on the land in the Inglewood district. Miss Fullerton married George Brown, an official of the Victorian railways, who took the first train to Wodonga. He was stationed at Ben-alla when the Kelly gang were at large. She is the last of her family, all of whom lived to a great age. Recently her brother-in-law died at Inglewood at the age of 100 years and six months. The deceased is survived by two daughters (Mrs. L. .A.. Austin, of. Portland and Mrs. J. Molloy, of Queensland) and three sons (Messrs. George, William and Edward, of Melbourne), and to them will be ex-tended the deepest sympathy. The remains left by the Melbourne Express on Monday night for Mel-bourne and interment took place be side those of her husband in the Presbyterian portion, of Fawkner cemetery, Melbourne, on Tuesday. Messrs.. John Simpkins and Son had charge of the arrangements. [5]
Burial Mary was buried on 26 November 1935 at Fawkner Cemetery, Fawkner, Victoria, Australia. [6]
