Biography

Gavin was born in 1795. He was a weaver by trade. He probably married around the age of 18. His wife was Janet Weir. His eldest daughter was born in 1814. Gavin and Janet had 5 known children.

He enlisted in the first regiment of Life Guards in 1815 and served 10 years. He re-enlisted in 1825 and served with the 5th regiment of the Dragoon Guards. He served in England and Ireland. He received a medical discharge after an accident to his wrist caused him to have rheumatic pain in his wrist and hand. [1]

In 1841 Gavin was living in Howieshill and working as hand loom weaver. he as living with his wife Janet, two daughters Jane and Marion and son Archibald.[2]

He appears to have worked briefly as a police officer.[3]

In 1861 he was living with wife, Janet, and working as a railway pointsman.[4]

He died of natural causes (old age) on March 13th 1869 at Howieshill. He was survived by his wife who passed away in 1873.
