Martin Augustin (probably known as August) was baptized in Alpthal, Canton Schwyz, Switzerland on Oct 06, 1833. (Possibly born the day before.) He is the son of Zacharias Fässler and Theresia Steiner. Their home was Malosen farm.[1]
His mother passed away in Alpthal in 1855. Throughout the 1850s and '60s, one sister, his father, and most of his brothers immigrated to America. Most of them originally settled in Carver County, Minnesota. After immigration most of them changed their family name from Fässler to Fessler.
August left the parish in Alpthal, but the records aren't clear as to where he went. At first it said that he was married to Elisabeth Steiner, then it said he was married to Cath. Steiner. In Alpthal, a Steiner family lived next door to the Fässlers and two of August's brothers married girls from that farm, one of whom was named Elisabeth, but she immigrated to America and married August's brother.
