Biography

Ivy was born on 29 August 1913 at Sheffield, Yorkshire, the daughter of Leonard Samuel Gadd and Gertrude Elizabeth Hall. She was baptised on 19 September 1913 at the Cathedral Church of St Peter & St Paul. The family was then living at 11/12 Cricket Inn Rd and Leonard was a rigger. Her date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register.

Ivy Gadd married John Frederick Medlock in 1934 at Peterborough, Northamptonshire.

From the Buckingham Advertiser and Free Press dated 14 December 1935, Pg 6 - BLETHLEY CYCLE THEFT. Described by the Metropolitan Police as a dangerous car thief, Reginald James Hughes, a Chingford engineer, was sentenced to six months imprisonment at Bletchley Police Court on a charge of stealing a workmate’s cycle, valued at £3, the property of John Frederick Medlock between October 9th and 10th. John Frederick Medlock, Ivy Dene, Newton Road, Bletchley, a brick-burner employed at Fletton’s Brickworks, Bletchley, said that at 5 p.m. he left his cycle against a fence, and at 6 a.m. next day it had gone. Parts of a cycle produced were his. Three weeks afterwards he went to the top of one of the kilns and saw a bicycle in which he could identify his three-speed gear and a green rear wheel. The frame was not his. Later he was shown the frame of a cycle which was his, whilst the chain, lamp and pump were missing, in addition to the two wheels and the three-speed. Defendant: George Barrett, 39, Saffron Street, Bletchley, foreman at Fletton’s, said defendant was injured whilst at work at Fletton’s Brickworks and was taken to hospital, and he (witness) was asked to take care of his cycle. Sergeant Merry said he visited Fletton’s Works at Water Eaton with Medlock and saw a cycle at the top of a kiln. Later the same day, in company with P.C. Pearson, he went and searched a pond at the rear of a shed where Hughes had been living. From the pond they recovered the cycle frame which Medlock identified as his, together with two bicycle wheels. In the shed they found two cycle tyres – one of which Medlock had identified – and two spindles. When cautioned, Hughes had said that he had taken the cycle, hoping to return it in the morning before it was wanted. Defendant stated that on the night in question it was raining. He took the cycle, intending to return it, but the chain broke, and when he found he could not return it in time he lost his head. He later had an accident at work and broke his arm. He had received X-ray photographs, and he had to go to hospital the following day for an operation. A list of previous convictions, including [sic] stealing, false pretences, shop-breaking, fraudulently abstracting electricity, and conspiring to steal motor-cars.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.

At that time John and Ivy were residing at 59 Taverners Road, Peterborough. John, aged 29, was a brickburner and retail dealer. His date of birth was recorded as 28 October 1909. John was also a member of the Auxiliary Fire Service. Ivy, aged 26, also worked as a retail dealer, probably in conjunction with her husband. Her date of birth was confirmed as 29 August 1913. Also living with them was Leslie Gadd, Ivy's younger brother. Aged 21, he was working at The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (L.M.S.). Leslie's date of birth was recorded as 5 November 1917. He was a member of St. John's Ambulance.
