Biography

John was born in 1848. He is the son of Joseph Gamblin and Jane Cook.^[1]

In the 1861 census, John Gambling, age 13 (bricklayer labourer) appears at South Stoneham, Hampshire. Also present at the address is his father Joseph (age 41, widowed, bricklayer), and siblings Mary Jane Gamblin (age15, housekeeper), Keziah Gamblin (age 11), William (age 9), Joseph (age 7), Samuel (age 5), and Elizabeth (age 3).^[2]

John's father Joseph immigrated to New Zealand with his new wife Elizabeth Parsons. They took with them John's full siblings Keziah, Samuel and William and a new half sister Elizabeth Jane - but John is not present. ^[3]
