Biography

Josiel Garbarsky was born about 1843 in Alytus to Girsh Davidovich Garbarski and Sara Mendelowicz . Josiel Garbarski ... He passed away in 1914.

He married Tyla Kac in Balbieriskis in 1864.

He came to Des Moines before his family, sometime around 1888. Lived in Des Moines primarily at 809 e Court St. In 1906 his youngest son Emil (Menachem Mandel) died at the age of 28. Josiel moved to El Paso to be with his son John after that, and died in El Paso in 1914.

Josiel was very proud to be a Cohen. he adopted that name on coming to America. His siblings took the name Gerber. The family were leatherworkers in Lithuania at the turn of the 19th century.
