Gertrude was born in Swansea, Massachusetts, in 1863, the daughter of Edward and Ann Elisa Gardner.[1] She was the eldest of three daughters, and grew up in Somerset, Massachusetts, where her father was a farmer.[2] By 1880, the family lived in Warren, Rhode Island, where Gertrude attended school.[3]
She was hired by the city of Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1889, where she was a teacher at the Edgerly School. [4] By 1900, she was working in the Boston Public Schools, where she spent many years at the Chapman School in East Boston[5] and in 1927 was a master's assistant and 3rd grade teacher at the Tappan School, in Boston.[6] She retired in 1934 as a master's assistant at the Chapman School.[7]
She applied for a passport in 1924, with the intention of traveling to several European countries.[8] She was 60 years old at the time and described as being 5'1", with blue eyes, brown & gray hair, and a round face.
She died in 1941 at her long-time Somerville home.[9] She is buried with her family at the North Gardner Cemetery in Swansea.[10]
