Edward Garland was born in Malling, Kent, England.

Edward Henry White Garland was born on 13 Dec 1858 in Malling, Kent, England to parents George William Garland and Elizabeth White. Edward's birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1858 in the Malling district.^[1] He was baptised on 26 Dec 1858 in West Malling, St Mary, Kent, England.^[2][3]

In 1871 he was age 12 and living with his widowed mother and siblings in Portsea Island, Hampshire, England.^[4]

In 1874 at age 16 he became an apprentice indentured in the Merchant Navy in Liverpool, England.^[5]

In 1880 at age 22 he earned his Masters and Mates Certificate in Portsmouth, England.^[6]

At age 36 Edward married Mary Ellen White, age 32, on 19 Jun 1895 in Strand, Westminster, Middlesex, England.^[7] Edward's marriage was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1895 in the Strand district.^[8][9][10]
