By March 30th 1851, they were living in Chebsey, Staffordshire; Thomas was a rail labourer. His 6-year-old cousin Abigal Shaw was in the household on census night.

Their daughter Eliza was born in 1852 in Stone district.

Their daughter Elizabeth was born in about 1857 in Atherstone district.

The family emigrated to Victoria, Australia on the Phoenix, arriving in November 1857. Thomas' occupation was recorded as coachman.
