Death

Death of her husband, Thomas Howland

The directory of 1876 shows Thomas Howland was still alive and lived in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, but the directory of 1877 shows Thomas Howland was not listed, so it hints that he died in 1877. Also, the directories of 1878 thru 1885 prove that Harriet Howland was the widow of Thomas Howland, so he died sometime between 1876 and 1877 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.[6]

Our research confirms the identification of Thomas Howland in the directories of 1871 thru 1885 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. They show Thomas Howland's two occupations as clerk and meat cutter, and his occupation as a meat cutter is consistent with the UK and US censuses' report on his occupation.[7]

Death of Harriet Gaskin Howland

The directories of 1878 thru 1885 show Harriet Howland, as widow of Thomas Howland, was still alive and lived in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. It seems she died in Syracuse sometime between 1885 and 1886 because she was not listed in the directories of 1886 and thereafter.

The burial record at Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse, New York shows that she died on 30 December 1886.[8]

Burial

Harriet G. Howland was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York.[8]

Research Notes

Harriet Gaskin Howland is not identical to Harriet Howland was buried at All Saints Churchyard in Boughton Aluph, Ashford Borough, Kent, England.[9] Harriet Howland, who was buried at All Churchyard in Boughton Aluph, was identified as Harriet Spain who married Thomas Howland.

Harriet Gaskin Howland migrated from Liverpool, England with her husband, Thomas Howland and four children to Boston, Massachusetts in August 1870.[10] She died there, probably in Syracuse, New York where her children were buried. The evidence is that in 1939, her son's application for his social security shows his mother was Harriet Gaskin, so it hints she was brought over with her husband and four children in the United States. Also, the census of 1875 and the directories of 1878 thru 1885 prove she was in the United States since 1870.[11]
